1. Lady Gypsy 2012-No Respect
2. All Rounder, 2012- Garlic Sauce
3. Impulse, 2012-King Stupid
4. Crazy, 2012-Cat First
5. Benjai, 2012- True Story
6. Lady Gypsy, 2012- Vintage Wine
Listen to all six renditions. Then compare and contrast two of the songs (any two of your choice). Reflect on themes, ideas, morals, ethics, language of the songs and state your views on the songs that you have compared. State three similarities or differences that you have noticed when comparing or contrasting the songs at hand.
Entertaining, double meaning lyrics and powerful are three similarities that All rounder and Impulse's song bore.
ReplyDeleteWhile Impulse's song is political as compared to All Rounder's, they are very though provoking songs and as a result, one's outlook may vary. Nevertheless they made great Ole Mas' topics this year. Garlic Sauce will very be the same for the impure minds and Drug pusher are belittled.
Mikkel your thoughts were well refined you made a good show of yourself. However, pay attention to your sentence construction techniques. I don't believe you have a challenge with this but your eagerness to post the blog; and get it over with has interfered with your sentence construction and fluency.
DeleteOh my! I humbly accept your comments and I will just like to correct my errors:
DeleteEntertaining, double meaning lyrics and powerful are three similarities that All rounder and Impulse's song bore.
While Impulse's song is political as compared to All Rounder's, they are very thought provoking songs and as a result, one's outlook may vary. Nevertheless they made great Ole Mas' topics this year. Garlic Sauce will not be the same for the impure minds that have heard All Rounder's lyrics whilst Drug pusher are belittled in Impulse's
In Trinidad and Tobago people always look forward to the Carnival season in anticipation of the new Calypso and Soca releases. The most intriguing and thought provoking renditions are the songs that have a double meaning. The craftiness of the Calypsonians to formulate lyrics that state one thing and mean another is both mind boggling and awe inspiring. The two songs that one is comparing and contrasting are All Rounder, 2012 – Garlic Sauce and Crazy 2012 – Cat First.
ReplyDeleteThe first song “Garlic Sauce” focuses on the theme of the singer being invited to dinner at the home of a woman who indicates to him that the menu for the night is hamburger. The singer indicates however, that before he partakes of the burger he must paste it with garlic sauce. If viewed figuratively, the song insinuates that the singer had a sexual encounter with the female. He uses language of the country’s local dialect which is usually standard with most calypsos, as calypso is a unique part of our cultural heritage.
In the second song “Cat First” the theme focuses on man’s love for the cat instead of the dog. It highlights that throughout history, mankind has been choosing the friendship of a cat despite the allegation that cats stray more than dogs and that dogs are man's best friend. The song highlights figuratively man’s lust for sex from a woman. The language is also local however in comparison to “Garlic Sauce” it differs because it quotes actual events that occurred regarding man’s lust for the opposite sex.
Both songs are the same in that they have a double meaning that pertains to sex. However, they are different because “Cat First” is morally degrading to women as certain verses of the song states, “Pussycat – so knock about you leave it at home it go find a hideout in town”. This suggests that although the man leaves his wife or woman at home, she would inevitably stray and commit adultery with another man.
In conclusion, both songs are widely popular with members of the public for their catchy double meaning lyrics. One cannot help but be awe inspired by both Calypsonians shrewdness of getting their double meaning message across to the audience.
Well done!!! Hats off to you Miss Rachael.
DeleteThe task is to choose two calypsos out of six and compare them.
ReplyDeleteThe two calypsos chosen are ‘Garlic Sauce’ by The All Rounder, and ‘Cat First’ by The Crazy.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, calypso is a kind of West Indian song with improvised words on a topical theme.
The theme used for these two calypsos surrounds the same topic, hence the reason for my choice.
Similarities:
Garlic Sauce and Cat First they both are referring to the same thing i.e. the private part of a female called the vagina.
The both calypsos are sung in a way to have double meaning. Garlic Sauce is referred to as a meal while Cat First is referred to as a man’s best friend.
They both tell a story of this private part.
Differences:
Garlic Sauce mainly seems to entertain by telling the story of an ingredient that can be used to have your meal namely the burger.
The composer used his opinion to introduce what help made his meal enjoyable.
While Cat First attempts to inform us about man’s best friend being a cat instead of a dog. Then the composer skilfully rhymed and used analogies that are somewhat factual to support his findings.
In conclusion I particularly preferred ‘Cat First’ as it uses different incidents that occurred to prove a point. However I tend to disagree with ‘cat’ taking the place of a dog as a best friend to a man, because this cat tend to always cause man to get into trouble when he seeks after more than one cat at a time.
Miss Felix do you think its the number of cats or the type of cats that bring woes to mankind?????
DeleteInteresting, entertaining and clever are some of the words used to describe the calypsos, “Garlic Sauce” and “Cat first” sang by All Rounder and Crazy respectively. Both calypsonians are noted for their crafty “double entendre” calypsos and for the year 2012, they both disguise these songs about females in different ways.
ReplyDeleteIn the song “Garlic Sauce”, All Rounder has been invited for dinner and has been served hamburgers. Being the clever individual that he is, he pulls out his own garlic sauce to dress his hamburger before eating. Innocent song isn’t it? On the flip side, having analysed this song to its entirety, one can gather that he was referring to preparations for a sexual encounter with a female associate.
Crazy on the other hand has not been invited to dinner. With his song “Cat First”, he attempts to convince men that the ‘pussy cat’ could make them happier than a dog ever could. But is the song really about man’s best friend? In this song, Crazy uses the term ‘pussy cat’ as another term for women and the benefits to be derived by men from owning or having them.
Although both songs are entertaining to the listening audience, Garlic Sauce is not as offensive to women as Cat First. The calypso Cat First is completely degrading to women especially in the verse which says that “pussy cats so knock about, yuh cyar tie dem down ……”. Is this a true indication of all women? This statement is one which can label all women as being ‘knock abouts’ or in local terms as being ‘bad’. It presents a negative image about us women. These songs tend to paint all women with one brush thereby making them instruments of sex that are grossly loose and immoral and this reflection is totally far from the truth.
I admire the language utilised to analyse and critique the calypsos under study. This was done well.
DeleteThe Calypso "Garlic Sauce" by All Rounder and "Cat First" by Crazy both have double meanings. All Rounder sang about visiting a female friend who offered him burger, and he spread garlic sauce all over the burger. On the other hand, he is referring to a sexual encounter with this woman where he will spread his male juices all over her private parts.
ReplyDeleteCrazy sang about convincing men that having a pet cat would make them more contented than having a dog. He is referring to a woman's private part, when used, will make any man very happy.
Both songs have double meaning and are very degrading to women as they signify that women can be used for men's satisfaction.
Mrs. Shanghie I admire the fact that you were blunt and quite frank; as you illustrated the derogatory language and concepts that were highlighted against women in both calypsos. Well done!!!!!!
DeleteSongs with double meaning are very popular around carnival time. They all pertain to sex. According to the Oxford English dictionary calypsos a west Indian song with improvised words on a tropical theme. The two calypso chosen are garlic sauce sound by all rounder and cat first song by crazy. Both songs refer to the female sexual organs but differ in terms of status and quality of women
ReplyDeleteYour reply was well accepted. It bears the mark of scholarly dissertation.
DeleteBenjai 2012-True story
ReplyDeleteBenjai song has double meaning,it is considered a "PUN."
It was an actual experience he had. Both Crazy's song and Benjai shared the same humor.
Crazy- Cat First for 2012
However, Crazy song although a 'Pun" was not an actual experience. His song is base on current affairs in the media. This song was also humourously funny. The song also contained similes where he compared "pet cat" to a femal's genitals.
Miss Williams well done. One thing that I should mention though, when writing it can be humorous or funny. Using the term humourously funny is considered as unacceptable language structure, it may well be equated with the use of the term reverse back which is grammatically incorrect.
DeleteWhat is calypso? Calypso is a West Indian music in syncopated African rhythm, typically with words improvised on a topic theme.
ReplyDeleteThe first song " Garlic Sauce" by All Rounder. All Rounder was invited for dinner. The menu was Hamburgers. After listening to the song two questions came to mind. They are as follows: What is he calling the hamburger? and What is being used for the Garlic Sauce? In my mind this song was written with a double meaning of sexual content being one and dinner (hamburger) being the other aspect.
The second song "Cat First" by Crazy also had a double meaning. His song was linked to both the female organs and also the media.
Well done!!!! Did you want to say "his song" or "this song"? (check concluding sentence.)
DeleteCrazy's "Cat First" is a humourously funny and clever play on words used not only to entertain but to inform the public on matters of current events involving the power of a womans genetials in the form of a story. With the womans genetials and the animal being compared (simile) in the reactions they can evoke from the opposite sex. The use of puns in this song added charater for the listener and softened what may very well be a serious matter. Benjai with his 2012 selection "True Story" also showed a clever play with words in a more serious matter of a true experience. His use of puns helped in adding humour to his story and also made the song hugely entertaining to the listener.
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with the term humourously funny? Why are these synonyms used simultaneously?
DeleteThe two songs being compare: Garlic Sauce by Allrounder 2012 and Cat First, Dog Second by Crazy 2012.
ReplyDeleteThe lyrical content of these two humorous calypsoes contains similes, metaphors and paronomasias. As with many calpysoes being sung during the Carnival season, these both songs contain clever double entendre.
Both Calypsonians, whose style of theatrical stagecraft is clearly evident in the lyrics of their songs. In Crazy's Cat First, Dog Second, his fun song used the term "dog" to refer to men (most Caribbean women refer to men as dogs) and "cat" to refer to the female genitalia. His song playfully tells about a man's love for the female genitalia it can cause him to bend or conform for the woman.
Allrounder's lyrics in Garlic Sauce mentions about the Garlic Sauce that he wants to spread on the lady's hamburger. This content of this song also has sexual connotations.
The language used in each song may be considered as smut ( crude pornography) to its listeners. However, if one listens to the lyrics, it can be seen that the Calypsonians use of artful double entendre is intended to bring laughter and humor to its listeners.
Summer an effective response, however I anticipated and expected a bit more in your critique. All in all a good response.
DeleteComparing All Rounder’s “Garlic Sauce” to Crazy’s “Cat First”
ReplyDeleteFor some of us, Carnival is about parading in our costumes on Monday and Tuesday but for others, it is about the lyrics in some calypsos that we anticipate every year at carnival time.
All Rounder and Crazy are two renowned calypsonians in our country and they are very predictable when it comes to their lyrics as it always contains some sort of double meaning “PUN”.
There were some similarities between both songs in that they both referred to the female’s private parts. For example in All Rounder’s song he said “put meh garlic sauce spread it on she burger, ah watch it, ah hold it, ah squeeze it” and Crazy said “Get a little pussy and show him, as a little pussy run below him, he running late for work, he staying home to stroke, as that little pussy get to know him”. Both singers’ utilized double meanings in their renditions as Crazy sang about a man’s best friend and All Rounder sang about Hamburgers although after careful analysis, both versions implied something else. They metaphorically emphasize their desire for the opposite sex and their private parts. Both songs were Humorous!
“Garlic Sauce” differs from “Cat First” as it spoke about a woman inviting All Rounder for dinner and serving him hamburger for supper and he used garlic sauce which enhanced his meal whilst “Cat First” was about convincing men that a cat is a preferred best friend than a dog.
Although humorous, both songs were ethically degrading to women and it presents a negative and disrespectful persona about us. The songs indicate that men can do anything humiliating to women!
The songs "Garlic Source” and “First Cat" are known as Puns. A Pun is a song that carries double meaning.
ReplyDeleteIn the song "First Cat", on listening to the lyrics one would be lead to believe that he is saying its time to stop referring to dogs as man's best friend. He is saying that a pussy cat (house pet) is better for a man to have than a dog. It was event further stated in the song that men love their cats and are very possessive of them, even though they may play with another man's they safeguard their own.
On the other hand, in the song "Garlic Source" the lyrics alone would suggest that he was invited by a female for super. It says he was given a burger and was putting on it whatever dressing he desired. It further states that he wasn’t hungry but was forced to eat the burger offered.
Both lyrics to the songs suggested tells the innocent listener a totally different meaning to what the songs are really about. These songs both talk about the female's private part (genital area) and the way men look at and or participate in adult activities(sexually) with women.
Three similarities found in these songs.
-both songs are Puns (songs with double meaning) and were both written for the amusement of the adult or mature audience.
- both songs to the mature listener are vulgar and talks about sexual entities of the female genitals.
- both songs were written by men that are obviously attracted strongly to the wonderful powers of the female genitals.
Throughout history, calypsonians have used this musical genre to express feelings, sentiments and findings that are true to the social scientist. Calypsos have always been a vehicle to either inform, persuade and even humour its listeners. Calypso to some, is a media of current affairs.
ReplyDeleteAfter listening to the two renditions,"Long Live Calypso," by Kurt Allen and "Looking for Jack," by King Generic, it was evident that these two songsters had several similarities in portraying their choice for this years calypso's tent. Both Mr. Allen and Generic's used of political themes, humour and informative information with the usage of their literary devices; such as, pun, paradox and sarcastic remarks, on the uprising current affairs.
The both calypsonians seemed to attack the present political party with their paradox and humor. Mr. Allen choice of singing on why he loves the present political party, when he states in his song " this partnership is such a trip, calypsonians have no shortage of topics..." He praised the political party for such corruption on which topics are flowing to assist him with writing calypsos. On the hand of seriousness he is simply singing about the culture trying to be depleted by this government,"I cyar say government supporting pan, them in Pantrinbago always in confusion,I cyar say government supporting mas, Mac Farlin always have so much reason to .....," "Pat Bishops gone nothing to show, this is how I know this government support calypso."
King Generic made it very humorous to his listeners as he, like Mr. Allen, attacks our government, but this time he singles out one of their Ministers. "Jack was a very bright fella, thinks he know everything, always have the right answer for the things that you ask him, but all of a sudden Jack disappear, like he just vanish in the thin air..... Ah looking for Jack, ASK (ass)!" He also brought seriousness to his song just as Mr.Allen did. He spoke about the person he observed Mr. Jack to be and he said he believes his brain maybe overworked with the decisions he making and taking part in. His spoke about the budget and how it an affect the country based on the choices made by the government.
On the two accounts of these calypsos the Calypsonians usage and choices of delivery was very similar as they attended to their topics.
The two songs I choose was "Garlic Sauce" by All Rounder and "Cat First" by Crazy. When I heard these two songs at first, I had to listen to them a second time to really understand them. They are songs with double meanings of what we call a "Pun" in English language today. The songs dealt with both day to day aspects of life and the sexual reproductive parts of the human body.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteCrazy was sang about why cat was considered as man's best friend whilst All Rounder sang about the purpose of the garlic sauce which was to complete one's meal. They both had some similarities which were they talked about the women's private part, they both used inferencing and they were crazy alike.
ReplyDeleteThe true meaning of the songs were not brought out they were hidden.
The both songs compared were "Cat Fish" by Crazy and "Garlic Suace" by All Rounder. Listening to both songs I didn't grasp the meaning of the song because it sounded as though Crazy was comparing two animals and All Rounder was conveying a message about food , but when I listened to the music again I understood what it is they were relating to.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of the lyrics was not not really bad especially the song by Crazy where he said "For too long dog has been a man best friend and it is time to end that and realize that a cat is really a man's best friend."(which he referring to female genital area)
The enthics of the song was a bit vulgar especially All Rounder which was distasteful in the chorus "Put meh garlic sauce spread it on she burger."
Three similarities were:
a. they were both vulgar
b. they had double meanings (pun)
c. they both sang about the female genital area.
The songs sung by these calypsonians were that of double meaning(pun)
The Calypso "Garlic Sauce" by All Rounder and "Cat First" by Crazy are both very creative and entertaining. They both have double meaning and is loved by alot of people. Alot of calypsonians use calypso to send a message. They were very similar because they were very vulgar and spoke about sexual encounters.
ReplyDeleteThe two songs that were chosen for comparing and contrasting were "Garlic Sause" sung by All Rounder and "Cat First" sung by Crazy.
ReplyDeleteAll rounder sang about dressing a woman's burger with his garlic sause, and he emphasized how he would go about doing so by saying,
"Ah watch it, ah hold it, ah squeeze it, ah eat it", but his intention meant getting ready for a sexual engagement.
On the other hand, Crazy sang about pussycats which were disguisedly classed as women and their private part in his song. He is saying that pussycats(women) are better to have as they make men happy in that they get pleasure from them which they cannot get from a dog (male friend or partner).
The way in which he described us women were as if we were, as our locals call say 'the baddest things out'. It was very disrespectful and disturbing especially those parts of which I quote "Pussycat-so knock about-you cyar tie it down, you leave it at home-it go find a hideout in town....and also, if a man in -the breeding business is money like sand".
The two songs are similar in that they both have vulgarity,double-meaning(pun) and their main topics were based on women and their private parts and differed in that 'Cat First' was very degrading as it came across as women displaying or having a bad character, but, 'Garlic sause' was not as degrading, but showed evidence that it was the woman who had placed her 'burger' in front of him and forced him to eat it.
In this life-time, it is evident that, if a woman is seen with more than one man she is classed as being 'bad', but when it happens vice-versa, men get all the praise, players, pimps, shottas, real G's, are their given names, as if they have done something so good.
I am wondering how many students are in the class. The number of individuals that post do not match the amount of students in the class. I am continuing to look at the blog entries through out the weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe entries that did not receive a comment will be read by weekend and feedback given.
The two songs which i am going to analyse is cat First and Garlic Sauce by All Rounder. The first time listening to both songs I had to listen them again to actual grasp the real meaning of the songs. In All Rounder song Garlic sauce I asked my self is this man really talking about hamburger? Nevertheless both songs were hilarious but degrading women in a sense for example, in the song cat first when he said,"Pussy cat so knock about-you cyar tie it down, you leave it at home-it go find a hideout in town." I found this to be very disrespectful. Also when All ROunder mentioned in his song,"ah really wasn't hungry but stil the woman force me for supper- this made it seemed like women always force men to have sex with them.
ReplyDeleteIn comparing both songs are pun's- have double meaning, both songs are degrading women and also both songs contains a sexual content.
All Rounder song Garlic Sauce as he spread garlic sauce on the hamburger, this is referring to sexual habits while a person is encountering sexual intercourse as he meets hie climax he is engaged and sends his juices all over her private parts.
ReplyDeleteCrazy Cat First, was not an acxtual experience, however, this song is reallly degrading women especially the verse that says "pussy cat so knock about, you cyar tie dem down"....these men think that all women are "bad and whoring",sending the wrong image to society and the up bringing of our tomorrow children.
The both songs has high sex content , they shared the same "pun'and emphasied on female gentials.
The two songs I chose to compare are: All Rounder Garlic Sauce and Crazy Cat first, Dog Second. I chose to compare these two genres of music because they are both humorous and contains similes, metaphors. During the carnival season people look forward to the songs being sung by the calypsonians that have double meanings also known as puns.
ReplyDeleteThe song garlic sauce and cat first was found to be similar in that they both talked about the private parts of the female.
All rounder’s hamburger was referring to the vagina of the female, whilst Crazy’s Cat first was referring to the vagina of the female as well. Dog second however was referring to the penis of the male species. The garlic sauce All rounder is referring to is that of the sperm of the male, after having sexual intercourse with a female, he takes the sperm( which he calls garlic sauce) and spreads it all over her vagina(which he refers to as hamburger).
Crazy’s line, “pussycat was a lucky charm-for Tiger Woods (a famous golfer), since his wife- raise the alarm he cyar play good,” also has a double meaning. This seems to refer to Tiger Woods having a little pussy cat in his corner gave him luck and charm while playing golf, so as is wife sold out his secret e can no longer pot a hole. While it also means that Tiger Woods could have gotten any and every woman and have sex with them because of his popularity, but, however, since his wife raised the alarm and made his promiscuity known he has to behave himself.
Both songs are vulgar and and although they are humorous, they are both degrading to women.
The two songs that i chose to compare are Garlic Sauce by All Rounder and Cat First by Crazy. These two songs are quite similar they both have double meaning, also very humorous, vulgar and quite entertaining. All Rounder song "put meh garlic sauce spread it on she burger," was referring to engaging in sexual contact with a woman. Whereas Cat First was also referring to women but degrading their character where he said, "pussy cat so knock about you cyar tie it down, you leave it at home, it go find hideout in town."
ReplyDeleteI chose to compare Garlic sauce by All Rounder and Cat First by Crazy. The aforementioned songs are both written in sarcastic language relating the feminine gender in derogatory tones. In recent times songs have begun to use word context in such a manner to mask the true lyrical meaning of the pieces. The suggestive language in addition to the pulsing beat of the songs have made the songs well played and widely received by society. One whether a fan of the artist or not may be singing along and dancing unconsciously when the songs are played over the airways. However disturbing both songs are to the feminine gender, they are factual in their account of the relationship between the male and female gender. All Rounder aptly said ' Spread it you know you want it' which made women seem greedy for sex whilst Crazy related women to being Cats that you cyar tie it down or leave it alone at home else it go find hideout in town.
ReplyDeleteCalypso has made a major contribution to the culture of Trinidad and Tobago throughout the years. Calypsonians have skilfully incorporated several literary devices into their pieces which have contributed to their effectiveness and double meaning. The lyrics of calypso music are highly rhythmic while one may often become confused as to its initial meaning. This discourse would aim to compare and contrast the content of the songs Cat first, dog after by Crazy and Garlic Sauce by All Rounder.
ReplyDeleteThe song, Cat first sung by Crazy is metaphorical and symbolical in meaning. In this song, Crazy states that he chooses ‘Cat first before dog.’ It can be interpreted that he prefers a cat, which is an animal, as opposed to a dog, which is also an animal. After one analyses this piece, one can also conclude that since the female reproductive system is often referred to as a ‘cat,’ it can be said that this song is highly sexual in content. On that note, one is able to understand the context of the song. The main idea conveyed in this song is that men prefer the female specie as opposed to the male specie. This song is highly unethical yet realistic since Crazy incorporated information on the scandal which claimed that Tiger Woods was involved in an extra marital affair as he sates, “Pussy cat was a lucky charm for Tiger Woods, since he wife raise tha alarm he cyar play good.’ Social commentary is a major aspect of calypsos as Crazy also made reference to other honourable men ‘from Jimmy Swaggart back to Bill Clinton.’ The incorporation of the line ‘all men love the cat, but love to hide it’ indicates that a major theme illustrated in this song is infidelity and manhood.
Similar to Crazy’s song Cat, is the 2012 release of the song Garlic Sauce by All Round. Both songs are double meaning in nature, metaphorical, symbolical and also suggest sexual undertones. The song garlic sauce is however very explicit and vulgar. This song is not merely concerned about a burger and applying garlic sauce as a dressing on it, however the female reproductive organ is being referred to as a burger while the semen which is released when a man ejaculates is being referred to as garlic sauce due to its colour and texture. It can therefore be concluded that the theme of this song is sexual arousal.
The upbeat tempo of these songs makes them catchy and causes one to sing them unconsciously at times. One therefore becomes oblivious to the fact that the contents of both songs are condescending and demoralize the female gender. These songs are therefore unethical and immoral in nature. One may ask if these Calypsonians are thinking about the children of our nation when they sing these sexual ditties. It can be said that these Calypsonians are not much better than Kartel and Movado who are often critiqued for their explicit songs.
The two songs cat first by crazy and garlic sauce by all rounder are both very comical. They are both puns and they are basically written about women genital parts. In crazy's song the humour is used as a form of hiding the disrespect to women and on the other hand it shows the importance of women to men. All Rounder tried to prove how women are the ones who are needy of men and they the men finally give in maybe showing sympathy. This is just a way of expression in the Trinidad and Tobago cultural art form.
ReplyDeleteI am going with two different choices. I choose Lady Gypsy 2012-No Respect. At first just hearing the melody I wasn't really interested in listening to her song but i still continued despite that fact. In this song she was talking about an ungrateful son Winston, who after all the struggles she met to provide for him forgot where he came from. Winston, the name of the child didn't even talk to his siblings. She even mentioned that if was Indian child they would have never treated their family like that. She was mad at the way he treated his family like dirt. His family was suffering while he was living a big life. She listed several instances where he refuse to help his family, he called police for his little sister and and treating his sister as a prisoner. This song was well written, the writer used play on word in order to bring across the message. The actual message in the song was about ungratefulness and the actual person being referred to was Mr. Winston Peters who she claimed has forgotten about his black brothers and sisters.
ReplyDeleteAnd in a total different twist this same singer sang 2012- Vintage Wine. In this song she compare the dances of two eras. Now and what she did when she was younger. In this song she claimed that her type of dancing was better because there was less vulgarity. The song even mentioned that the Jamaican dance hall culture was infiltrating our young people mode of dancing including added vulgarity and nakedness. Again this song was well written, even though she was talking about dancing there was a bigger message which included self respect and love for our culture. and wanted the young people (women) to go back to having self respect as far as behaviour and dress code entails.
Two beautiful songs, both songs are similar as the messages being relayed all deal with human behaviour(ungratefulness, vulgarity and nakedness, self respect) Thanks Miss for making these songs choice because honestly speaking I may have never listened to those songs.
Once again many individuals have lost focus and strayed away from the question (s) asked. It is critical that you stay on task and respond to what was asked. Marks would be awarded for this. As one makes a contribution to the discourse at hand one should also analyse and critique the literary material not just give bare responses. Speakers could converse about the language, tone, figurative and literary devices employed in these calypsoes.
ReplyDeleteIt is also recommended that you analyse your peers answers and make constructive comments. Please ensure that your comments are not disrespectful and bear marks of adversity in any way. Be professional and ensure that the contribution made will embellish the speaker or writers ability to analyse and critique ones discourse. This is an opportunity to build up once writing rather than break it down.
ReplyDeleteThe two songs that i listened to are:(1) Lady Gypsy 2012-No Respect
ReplyDeleteShe sang of her brother who refused to help her in her time of need. Her brother (Winston Peters) pretended he didn't know her when she was held by the Canadian Embassy. she sang on her daughter as well, how she turned her back on her after she start making it (money)she went on to sing about she being of the East Indian race she would not have been treated in such manner by her own. The grief she felt was expressed clearly. She talked about super and how he hurt her; also of her mother who is in the United State dying slow and yet no help is offered by Mr. Peters.
The other song was Benjai, 2012- True Story this song is considered a pun with addded humor, its a clear expression of what the singer experienced. Three similarities are motif, denotation and intrusion.
ReplyDeleteThe two songs listened to was Lady Gypsy 2012-No Respect and Impulse, 2012-King Stupid. Both songs were sang this year. Lady Gypsy's song speaks for itself. She is singing about her personal life and the troubles she has faced with her family. She uses this calypso to air her views of her brother and her daughter and in general about people who forget where they come from. We can all relate to this. She talks about race and political afiliation in her song when she mentions "Prematie and Raghbhir" who look out for their own whereas her brother and daughter do not look out for their own.. Her song makes one wonder how a person could turn their backs on their family.
ReplyDeleteIn Impulse's song "King Stupid" was the other song looked at. Impulse sings about the the current situation in Trinidad and Tobago. Unlike Lady Gypsy, Impulse sings about the crime situation and politics. When listening to this song one just has to smile because of the twists in the lyrics and they can relate the things being sang in the song. people can relate to both songs in their own way.
People can relate to the language in both songs. Unlike Lady Gypsy Impulse a play on words makes the song very interesting and shows his prejudice and personal oppion of the present government.
Calypso is a song in which I choose to compare and contrast is All rounder 2012,Garlic Sauce and Crazy 2012 Cat .Cat First three similarities are double meaning lyrics ,figurative language and humorous. These song are very much entertain and insulted to women.
ReplyDeleteInteresting calypsos "Garlic Sauce" and "Cat First" both sang by smart, hilarious and powerful calypsonian 'All Rounder' and 'Crazy' respectfully. These songs were of double meaning, vulgar and beam about females in different ways. 'All Rounder' attempted to attest that women are in need of men while the men express compassion by giving in to them. 'Crazy' simply showed the necessity of women to men but he clearly disrespected them. These were surely some wildly ways of expressing our cultural art form through calypso.
ReplyDeleteI chose to compare King Stupid by Impulse and Garlic sauce by Allrounder. The poetic content in both songs are double implications and they are also hilarious. However Impulse uses puns in the form of calypso to make heated political comments. On the other hand Allrounder took a stand for all men where by he boosted that women are not completed without men
